[edit]Filming for the season began on July 20, [39] It was announced on July 23, , that season 8 of The Vampire Diaries would be the series' last and co-creator Kevin Williamson would return as a showrunner.[40][41] Filming for the season ended on February 8, [42]
Casting
[edit]On January 26, , it was announced that Nina Dobrev would return as Elena Gilbert in the series finale.[43] At the end of the episode, "It's Been a Hell of a Ride" on February 24, , it was revealed that Dobrev would reprise her role of Katherine Pierce as well.

The series premiered on the CW on September 10, , and concluded on March 10, , having aired episodes over eight seasons.
The pilot episode attracted the largest audience for the CW of any series premiere since the network launched in ;[1] the first season averaged million viewers.[2] It became the most-watched series on the network before being surpassed by Arrow. The show has received numerous award nominations, winning four People's Choice Awards and many Teen Choice Awards.
