The Irish composer John Field is credited with the invention of one of the most popular classical genres.
John Field is a relatively unknown name in today’s classical music world, but he was a hugely influential figure in his day and created the nocturne, a form later perfected by Frédéric Chopin.
He was born in 1782 in Dublin and raised in a musical household. His father, Robert, was a violinist in Dublin’s booming theatre scene, and young John took piano lessons from his grandfather, a professional organist. He later learned with the Italian composer Tommaso Giordani and made his solo debut at the age of nine in a well-received concert in Dublin.
A year later, the family moved to London, where John studied with the pioneering keyboard player and teacher, Muzio Clementi. During the next decade, he began performing extensively in the capital and was soon a household name, lauded by the press and fellow musicians alike, including a visiting Joseph Haydn. In 1799, he gave the premiere of his first piano concerto, the first important work he wrote.

John Field (born May 15, 1962) is an Australian guitarist, singer, songwriter, and composer who has worked with The Wiggles for several years, and is responsible for writing and co-writing some of their biggest and most popular hits, such as "Hot Potato", "Get Ready To Wiggle", and "The Monkey Dance". He is the younger brother of musician and former Wiggles manager Paul Field and the older brother of founding blue Wiggle Anthony Field, having worked with them and founding purple Wiggle Jeff Fatt in the rock band The Cockroaches prior to the Wiggles' creation.
In addition to working with the Wiggles, Field performs as the guitarist and co-lead vocalist of live event bands John Field and The Epics and The John Field Band and with brother Paul as the musical duo The Field Brothers, with both groups having released two studio albums each as of 2023. He also serves as the owner and main composer of John Field Production Music, a production music company that licenses stock music for use in various media, and has written two musicals: 2001's Evie & the Birdman and 2017's Who Loves Me?, both of which feature several performers who have also worked with the Wiggles including Sam Moran, R
