Jacques Cartier was a sailor from St. Malo, France who had been on fishing trips to the Grand Banks. Jacques Cartier was hired by the French king, King Francis I, to explore North America, which was formerly known as the New World, and search for gold and jewels in the new land and find the Northwest Passage. Cartier had made three exploration voyages. Jacques Cartier set out on his first voyage on April 20, 1534. His journey consisted of two ships, a crew of sixty-one, and it took him 20 days to get to Newfoundland. He sailed from the north end of the island, down to the west side, and into the gulf of St. Lawrence.
