    Actor Michael Williams, husband of Dame Judi Dench, died on Thursday, after a long battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by friends and family, said a statement issued by his agent, Julian Belfrage Associates. Michael had been ill for many months. Dame Judi recently cancelled engagements to be with him when he took a turn for the worse.

    Adrian Noble, artistic director of Royal Shakespeare Company, said: "Michael was one of the most gifted and versatile actors of his generation." He added: "The public held him in their affection as something of a national treasure."

    The night before he died, Michael had celebrated receiving his Papal knighthood. He was awarded the honour in November 2000, but received it officially from Canon John McDonald, national chaplain of the Catholic Stage Guild.

    Michael Leonard WilliamsKSG (9 July 1935 – 11 January 2001) was a British actor who played both classical and comedy roles. He was best known for co-starring in the sitcom A Fine Romance with his wife Dame Judi Dench, and for voicing Dr. Watson in the long-running Sherlock Holmesadaptations for BBC Radio.

    Williams was born on 9 July 1935 in Salford, Lancashire.

    Williams married Judi Dench on 5 February 1971, the same year in which they co-starred in a stage production of John Webster's The Duchess of Malfi. They had one daughter, Finty Williams, who is also an actress.[1] Williams was also godfather to the actor Rory Kinnear.[2]

    Williams was the President of the Roman Catholic Actors' Guild.[3]
