    The whole programme deserves closer scrutiny. But for now I’d like to zoom in on just one work, Nocturne in D flat major by Polish composer and virtuoso pianist Frédéric Chopin (1810 – 1849).

    It was one of many night-inspired pieces chosen by Benabdallah in the second half of his recital. Nocturne, as is explained, is a broad musical term for a work inspired by, of evocative of, the night.   

    Chopin’s Opus 27 is a set of two nocturnes that he composed in 1836 and published the following year. He dedicated both to Countess Teresa Apponyi (1790 – 1874).
