Tibor “Ted” Rubin (18 June 1929 to 05 December 2015) was a former Hungarian-American Army Corporal. A Holocaust survivor who immigrated to the United States in 1948, he fought in the Korean War and was awarded the Medal of Honour for his actions during the war, as a combatant and a prisoner of war (POW).
Rubin received the award from President George W. Bush on 23 September 2005, 55 years after the Korean war. Rubin was repeatedly nominated for various military decorations, but was overlooked because of antisemitism by a superior. Fellow soldiers who filed affidavits supporting Rubin’s nomination for the Medal of Honour said that Rubin’s sergeant “was an anti-Semite who gave Rubin dangerous assignments in hopes of getting him killed”. In November, 2016, President Obama signed legislation renaming the Long Beach California VA Medical Centre after Rubin.
Early Life
Rubin was born on 18 June 1929, in Pásztó, a Hungarian town with a Jewish population of 120 families, one of six children (by three marriages) of shoemaker Ferenc Rubin.
When Tibor was 13, Ferenc and Rosa Rubin (stepmother) tried to send him to safety in neutral Switzerland, but he was caught and sent to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria.

In summer 1950, Mr. Rubin was ‘‘volunteered’’ to defend a strategic hill while the rest of his company withdrew to safety near the Pusan Perimeter amid an onslaught by North Korean troops. The enemy attack began at dawn, and Mr. Rubin said he became hysterical as they swarmed the hill ‘‘like ants.’’
He fired helter-skelter, lobbing grenade after grenade to create the impression of more than one man. ‘‘Pull the pin, boom, pull the pin, boom,’’ he said. Unable to see through the resulting smoke, he kept up the defense for a full day, defending his post until American-manned Corsairs repelled the remaining North Koreans from the air.
‘‘He inflicted a staggering number of casualties on the attacking force during his personal 24-hour battle, single-handedly slowing the enemy advance and allowing the Eighth Cavalry Regiment to complete its withdrawal successfully,’’ read his citation for the Medal of Honor, the military’s highest award for valor.
