I believe those who tickle our fascination with space and beyond should have a special place amongst the stars in gratitude of that deed. Wende Doohan's husband James Doohan -- Star Trek's "Mr. Scott" --  is one of those people. With her at his side, Jimmy showed us that a Chief Engineer is the heart of any one starship and without his constant attention, the melding of his soul to vessel, no way could we achieve our release into the cosmos nor the confidence of our return. Wende is the sort of woman who enhances her partner to outstanding and convincing performances and by doing so, has made many of us lifelong fans.

When I first met Wende, it was during Jimmy's last convention appearance at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Hollywood. I was the emcee and in honor of Jimmy, we provided an array of Trek and science celebrities including the organizers of the XPRIZE space competition and the world famous astronaut Neil Armstrong, who was a huge “Scotty” fan. Wende was always steadfast at his side and that's when I noticed her endearing love to a man who was experiencing the ravages of disease:

When it came to taking care of the USS Enterprise, no one did it better than Scotty. The chief engineer babied the starship, nurtured it and lovingly coaxed new accomplishments from it. The Enterprise may have been Capt. Kirk's lady, but it was Scotty's baby.

Now, James Doohan, the actor who portrayed Montgomery Scott in television's "Star Trek," has a new enterprise, and her name is Sarah. She's the month-old daughter of Doohan, 81, and his wife, Wende,

Sarah is sure to be one topic Doohan will gladly discuss today through Sunday at Trek Expo in Tulsa, where he will greet fans and sign autographs. He also is scheduled to take the stage at 3 p.m. Saturday.

"Oh, I tell you, it's something else, because she is so smart," Doohan said in a recent phone

interview from his home near Seattle.

"We are told by all the experts she gave birth to a genius. That's what they say about late births. I can tell, the way she is handling her life right now, at 14 months She is a brilliant child, just gorgeous."

Doohan has a total of seven children - four boys and three girls - and nine grandchildren. He and Wende have two sons in their 20s and now Sarah, whom Wende named after Doohan's mother.

He said one reason Sarah is special is beca
