James Reid Lambdin was born May 10, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to James Lambdin, a carpenter from Kent County, Maryland and Prudence Harrison, a relative of William Henry Harrison (ninth President of the United States). At 15, Lambdin embarked on his art career, traveling to Philadelphia where he studied with miniaturist, Edward Miles and portraitist, Thomas Sully. Both men thought highly of Lambdin and they remained life-long friends. Lambdin asked Sully, to paint his portrait so that he could watch and learn from the master. Along with Miles and Sully, his circle of illustrious friends included William Dunlap, art historian, John James Audubon, artist and naturalist, and Samuel F.B. Morse, artist, inventor, and first president of the National Academy of Design (New York City). He returned to Pittsburgh in where he advertised drawing lessons and sought portrait commissions. Between and , Lambdin led a rather peripatetic lifestyle, traveling to the numerous population centers along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers—Wheeling (WV), Louisville and Lexington (KY), Mobile (AL), Natchez, (MS), Stuebenville (OH), and New Orleans (LA) seeking portrait commissions. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, James Reid Lambdin () gained renown as a portrait painter, professor, and leader in the arts community. At a young age he discovered what was to be his life-long calling when he saw a copy of a Gilbert Stuart painting on a sign outside his childhood home. He moved to Philadelphia in to begin his artistic career and quickly came under the tutelage of Thomas Sully. By , Lambdin had returned to Pittsburgh, and in , he opened the Pittsburgh Museum of Natural History and Gallery of Fine Art, modeled after Charles Willson Peale’s museum in Philadelphia. His collection, which included over fifty paintings and fossils, was welcomed as one of the first public exhibits of art in the West. In , he moved his museum to Louisville, Kentucky but eventually settled in Philadelphia in with his wife, Mary Cochran, and their six children.
