Bio: Jean-Bertrand Aristide was born on July 15, 1953 in the coastal town of Port-Salut, Haiti.
After completing his post graduate studies in psychology at the State University of Haiti in 1979 Aristide traveled to Rome and then to Israel where he spent two years studying biblical theology.
On July 3, 1983 Aristide returned home for his ordination as a parish priest. Aristide shared in the lives and struggles of his parishioners and quickly became their spokesperson. Jean-Bertrand Aristide (French pronunciation:[ʒɑ̃bɛʁtʁɑ̃aʁistid]; born 15 July 1953) is a Haitian former Salesian priest and politician who became Haiti's first democratically elected president in 1991 before being deposed in a coup d'état.^[1][2] As a priest, he taught liberation theology and, as president, he attempted to normalize Afro-Creole culture, including Vodou religion, in Haiti.^[3][4][5]
